Build the Infrastructure Mindset

This interest group supports a deeper understanding of how modern technology platforms are designed, implemented, and maintained, with an emphasis on foundational systems thinking and scalable cloud and infrastructure environments.

Learn the “why” behind the tools

You will focus on architecture decisions, tradeoffs, and operational habits that apply across providers and real organizations.

Practice with real workflows

Sessions emphasize clear demonstrations, guided discussion, and practical exercises that reinforce what you learn in courses and labs.

Prepare for internships and entry-level roles

Topics align with the expectations of infrastructure, cloud, and operations roles, including reliability, security basics, and professional documentation.

Cloud Architecture Design Studio

This in-person design studio brings students together to explore how modern cloud platforms are planned, structured, and evaluated in real organizational contexts. Participants work through a realistic cloud architecture scenario, examining requirements, constraints, security considerations, and scalability goals while developing and refining a proposed solution.

Across multiple guided sessions, students engage in architectural reasoning, collaborative discussion, and professional design review, gaining practical insight into how cloud and infrastructure decisions are made in practice. The studio is open to interested students and serves as a capstone experience for those enrolled in the Intro to Cloud Computing course.

TBD

Design Studio Session 1: Infrastructure Thinking for Cloud Platforms

In person | Open to interested students

This opening design studio introduces how cloud service models translate into real infrastructure decisions. Participants analyze a realistic scenario, identify constraints, and begin shaping a cloud solution through guided discussion and collaborative planning.

TBD

Design Studio Session 2: Identity, Access, and Security Design

In person | Open to interested students

Participants focus on identity and access design, applying least-privilege principles and security reasoning to their proposed architectures. The session emphasizes how access decisions affect security, operations, and long-term scalability.

TBD

Design Studio Session 3: Architecture Review and Solution Showcase

In person | Open to interested students

The final session features an open review and showcase of cloud architecture solutions. Participants present design decisions related to availability, resilience, security, and cost, followed by discussion and feedback in a professional, studio-style setting.

How the Design Studio Sessions Work

Each session follows a consistent, guided format so participants know what to expect and can engage confidently, regardless of prior cloud experience.

1. Scenario Introduction and Context

Each session begins with a brief overview of the design scenario and its constraints. Participants are guided through the technical and organizational context so everyone understands the goals before design work begins.

2. Guided Design Discussion

Participants explore design options together, discussing service models, architecture considerations, and tradeoffs. Discussion is facilitated to connect ideas to real-world cloud practices.

3. Hands-On Design Work

Students sketch architectures, outline decisions, and document reasoning individually or in small groups. Work is conceptual and design-focused rather than code-heavy.

4. Review and Reflection

Sessions conclude with informal design reviews, questions, and reflection. Participants learn from different approaches and gain insight into how cloud decisions are evaluated in practice.

Participation Style

Guided and collaborative, with opportunities to ask questions, contribute ideas, or observe and learn.

Preparation Required

None. Optional self-paced resources are provided for students who want additional background.

What You Gain

A clearer understanding of cloud architecture thinking, professional design reasoning, and real-world decision-making.

No prior cloud experience is required. Participants may attend one or multiple sessions, observe quietly, or actively contribute based on their comfort level.

Get Involved

Join meetings, learn the fundamentals, and develop habits that support long-term growth in infrastructure and cloud-focused roles.
