GovState ACM Student Chapter Marks a Strong First Year of Impact

In its first year as a chartered chapter, the GovState ACM + UPE Student Chapter expanded technology learning beyond the classroom through professional speakers, hands-on challenges, career pathways, competitions, and community outreach.

The chapter also supported hands-on competitions, workshops, industry credentialing pathways, and student-led community engagement throughout the year.


Since receiving its charter on November 6, 2025, the GovState ACM Student Chapter has built a growing community centered on leadership, technical development, career preparation, and service. The chapter works alongside UPE, WiCyS, and student interest groups to connect students with opportunities across cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, software development, networking, cloud computing, and information technology.

The chapter’s mission is clear: prepare students for technology careers through leadership, technical growth, and community outreach. During the 2025–2026 academic year, that mission became visible through measurable participation, professional engagement, hands-on experiences, and partnerships that extended beyond the university.

The chapter’s first year demonstrated what becomes possible when professional learning, student leadership, and community service are brought together.

Professional Perspectives Brought into the Classroom

The Pathways to Success Speaker Series connected students directly with professionals whose experiences brought technology careers to life. Speakers were incorporated into class sessions as structured learning experiences, helping students connect academic concepts with workplace expectations, professional decisions, and emerging areas of practice.

Topics included the transition from classroom to career, advanced artificial intelligence applications and agents, identity and access management, system administration pathways, resilience and professional growth, cybersecurity performance under pressure, artificial intelligence ethics, and bias in large language models.

Across the year, the chapter welcomed two ACM Distinguished Speakers and five industry and alumni guest speakers. Their participation gave students access to technical expertise, career guidance, and professional perspectives that would be difficult to reproduce through coursework alone.

Hands-On Learning Through Build & Boot

The Build & Boot IT Hardware Challenge gave students an opportunity to demonstrate practical knowledge under time pressure. Participants worked in teams to disassemble, rebuild, and successfully boot computer systems while applying hardware identification, system assembly, troubleshooting, documentation, communication, and teamwork skills.

The challenge welcomed 50 participants from across the university and required no previous experience. Its open format allowed experienced students to test their abilities while giving newcomers an approachable way to learn through direct participation.

Career Growth Beyond the Classroom

The chapter also helped students explore industry learning platforms and competitive cybersecurity pathways. These opportunities included AWS Academy, Microsoft Learn, Google Cloud Skills Boost, Cisco Networking Academy, the National Cyber League, U.S. Cyber Games, and capture-the-flag competitions.

By introducing students to credentialing platforms, technical challenges, and competitive programs, the chapter encouraged members to build evidence of their skills beyond traditional course grades. Students could strengthen technical confidence, practice solving unfamiliar problems, and better understand the expectations of technology employers.

Extending Technology Learning into the Community

Community outreach became another important part of the chapter’s first-year impact through Future Technology Pathways, a partnership between Governors State University and Bloom High School in Bloom Township High School District 206.

The 10-day summer program, delivered from June 18 through July 6, 2026, introduced high school students to technology foundations, networking, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and college exploration. Activities were hosted across the GovState and Bloom High School campuses, giving participants meaningful exposure to university-level technology learning before beginning the college application process.

GovState student volunteers served as near-peer mentors throughout the program. Their involvement allowed high school students to learn from college students who could answer questions, share experiences, model professional behavior, and make technology pathways feel more accessible.

A Foundation for Continued Growth

The chapter’s first year established a strong foundation for continued student engagement. Future priorities include expanding membership across ACM, UPE, Girls Who Code, and WiCyS, creating additional capture-the-flag competitions and hands-on challenges, strengthening partnerships with industry, and extending K–12 outreach to additional communities.

These goals build upon a year of demonstrated participation and collaboration. As the GovState ACM Student Chapter moves forward, its focus remains on helping students develop technical skills, professional confidence, leadership experience, and meaningful connections to the broader technology community.
